Arguably, what separates us more than our appearance, is our voice.
Voices are so unique and full of story that they can be a powerful tool to use whilst making films. Your voice belongs to you and the character you play. As a director, or actor, it is important not to overlook the effectiveness of pronunciation and iteration, when storytelling.
Voices can adapt as much as costumes can change an appearance - think about accents, lisps, syllables, enunciation and pace, when uncovering your voice. Experiment with different versions, see what this journey takes you on and you might uncover a voice to use in the future.
Recently I’ve tried to create a voice for an image, and I must say it is a very humbling experience. But it is important as a director, to understand the difficulties actors face when creating a character, so that when you come to direct, you understand what is achievable and whats not.
I aim to continue to force myself into these uncomfortable situations actors find themselves in daily, to develop an understanding of their process which will help empathise with actors who may struggle on set.
