Are Extras Underrated?

Upon watching the first episode of the Rings of Power series on Prime Video, I was reminded how effective the use of extras and first time actors was.

In particular, seeing the hobbits all come out of hiding was fascinating, and the use of multiple close ups and changing angles kept this scene interesting. By having actors that weren't easily recognisable in this scene, the director managed to capture a natural, realistic scene, that felt human and entriguing.

Do you ever watch a film, but only picture the actor that plays the character, rather than the character themselves?

I can't help but picture well known, recognisable actors, rather than there character, when watching some films, which is often distracting and takes away from the viewing experience.

I think in the future I will not forget the importance of using fresh talent when casting for my films or tv programmes, as they provide a uniqueness that known actors can not.
