Books, Scripts and Plays

I’ve recently discovered the importance of reading books, scripts and plays, when trying to grow as a filmmaker.

The impact that books have had on my ability to think about a characters backstory and the way they are connected to other characters - as well as, knowing how to flesh out a name into a fully fledged believable being.

Reading film scripts has vastly improved my ability to format scripts into usable documents for filmmaking. I’ve also been able to understand the role of a screenwriter better, by thinking about the decisions they’ve made whilst reading their scripts.

Finally, I think it is important to also read plays from a range of eras to understand how communication has developed over centuries, since this could be used when creating a characters voice and persona.

Let me know of any books, scripts or plays that you’ve read and found helpful, as I would love to give them a read!
