How the Hobbit trilogy kept me entertained.

Recently I decided to watch the Hobbit trilogy as a way of escaping this world and entering another. I knew that each film in the trilogy was over two-and-a-half hours long, so was worried that I would get lost in the adventure and find myself never finishing a film in one go.

However, to my surprise I finished the first film wondering how it flew by so quickly. I decided to investigate the film further to hopefully understand how this film was so successful in maintaining an audience throughout. Turns out the films location stayed in The Shire (Bilbo's Home Town) for forty minutes! I was fascinated by the fact that I didn't notice how long we were there for due to the number of characters present and the amount of stories told.

What I loved about this film is that the Journey was a Journey and there were so many beats of adventure throughout the film, such as; Radagast the Brown wizards introduction, encounter with trolls, Necromancer at Dol Guldur, Orc Packs and Warg Scouts, falling into a cave that lead to Riverdell, Pale Orc and Mountain Giants, Goblin Cave and Gollum then finally escaping the Orc's fire of ginormous eagles. After researching this information, it's no wonder I was entertained throughout, since there was a new part of the journey every ten minutes.

In the future, when I come to write and direct my own films, I will aim to create worlds that offer me opportunities to have adventures in them, that will entertain all audiences and keep them engaged throughout. I am amazed by how much can be achieved in one film and would love to write a script as good as this one.
