How to write effective dialogue.

How can we, as filmmakers, ensure our dialogue is natural, effective and captivating?

Recently, I completed a directing exercise that has enhanced my ability to write dialogue with pace, emphasis and character relationships in mind. More commonly known as eavesdropping.

This video can be seen on my YouTube Channel and should be used as a sort of case study into how different relationships affect the flow of conversation. It’s important to consider these things when writing dialogue for your own short films, as you aren’t writing how you would say something, you are writing how the character would say it.

In the future, I will be experimenting with even more exercises, as this was an eye-opening experience that has truly affected my ability to write consistent, natural dialogue.
