How transferrable is a Filmmaking Degree?

The short answer is very! But what makes this degree so valuable?

Over the course of a three year Filmmaking degree, students will learn extensively about the seven different areas of the industry - Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Screenwriting and Producing. All of which come with extremely valuable transferrable skills. However, after specialising in one of these aforementioned areas, your understanding of that department grows exponentially.

A Filmmaking degree doesn't have to define your career path into the Film and Television industry. If you have an understanding of storytelling and character creation, then what's stopping you from branching out into Social Media and Marketing?

I think that now more than ever, brands are beginning to tap into the creative minds of my generation to market their products successfully to all ages. An education in filmmaking is now seen as valuable and a necessity when starting up a new business. I think the world of advertising will continue to change and we will see more and more companies producing short form films to promote their products.

Finally, I believe this degree to be very transferrable, as in my experience, the time spent at University consisted of developing skills such as; time-management, organisation, creativity, collaboration (teamwork), honesty, professionalism and dedication, which are skills often advertised on job posts in a multitude of industries. Therefore, the only challenge is finding a company that is brave enough to make that leap and develop a department dedicated to emotionally investing an audience in their business - and the medium of film is the perfect way to do so.
